How much SEO costs in the UK in 2026, explained by Bee Viral

Real UK SEO prices for 2026, from freelancers to national agencies. What each level actually buys, how to spot a bad deal, and what our £300 a month includes.

Ask most agencies what SEO costs and you'll hear "it depends". That's true, but it doesn't help you when you're holding one quote for £99 and another for £1,500 and trying to work out which of them is taking you for a ride.

So here are real numbers. Below you'll find what SEO costs in the UK at each level, what you should get for the money, the ways it can be priced, and the warning signs at both the cheap end and the expensive end. We're a South Yorkshire agency and we publish our own price, so you'll see exactly where we sit too.

SEO prices in the UK at a glance

Who does itTypical monthly costWhat that usually buysBest for
Freelancer£50 to £300One person, a few hours a month, often one task such as your Google profile or a couple of pagesSole traders testing the water
Local agency£300 to £800A small team covering your Google profile, local pages, content and a monthly reportLocal businesses that want to win their town
Mid-size agency£800 to £2,000More content, link building, technical work and a named account managerFirms covering a region or several branches
National agency£2,000 to £10,000+A full team, national keywords, heavy content and digital PROnline shops and brands competing across the UK

These bands come from our own view of the market rather than a study, so treat them as a guide. Our price, £300 a month, sits at the bottom of the local agency band.

If you want a survey, the biggest recent one we know of is from Ahrefs. It asked 439 SEO providers around the world what they charge. The most common monthly fee was $501 to $1,000, and agencies charged 138% more on average than freelancers. That was published in August 2024 and priced in US dollars, and it has no separate figures for the UK, so read it as a rough cross-check rather than a UK price list.

Why our figures are lower than some other guides

Search for SEO prices and you'll find UK guides quoting £500 to £20,000 a month, and some saying anything under £500 is mostly automated. Most of those guides are written by agencies whose clients are bigger companies, competing for searches across the whole country.

That's a different job. A plumber, a salon or an accountant who wants to be found in their own town is up against a handful of local rivals, not every business in Britain. The work is smaller, so the price can be too.

Lower doesn't mean anything goes, though. The less you pay, the more carefully you should check the list of what you're getting. A low price with a clear monthly list is fine. A low price with no list is the warning sign.

What makes SEO cost more or less?

Four things drive almost every SEO quote you'll get.

1. How much competition you have

A mobile hairdresser in a small town will usually have fewer rivals on Google than a solicitor in a city centre. The more businesses fighting for the same searches, the more work it takes to get ahead of them, and the more it costs.

2. Where you want to be found

Local SEO means showing up in your own town and the map results. National SEO means ranking across the whole country. Local is cheaper because you're only up against businesses near you, not every company in the UK.

3. What's actually being done

SEO is a label for lots of different jobs: fixing your website, writing pages, running your Google Business Profile, getting reviews, building links and reporting. A £1,000 quote and a £300 quote may be for completely different amounts of work. Always ask for the list of what you get each month.

4. Who does the work

A senior specialist costs more than a junior, and a UK team costs more than work sent overseas or done by software. Neither is automatically bad, but you should know which one you're paying for. Ask who will actually do the work on your account.

Monthly, hourly or one-off: how SEO is priced

There are three ways you'll see SEO sold, and each one suits a different job.

Pricing modelHow it worksSuits
Monthly retainerA fixed fee every month for an agreed list of workOngoing ranking, which is what most local businesses need
HourlyYou pay for the time spentAdvice, training or small fixes
One-off projectA fixed price for a set piece of workAn audit, a website move or a technical clean-up

Monthly is the most common because SEO keeps going. Your competitors keep publishing, Google keeps changing, and your reviews and Google profile need looking after every week. In the Ahrefs survey, the most common hourly rate was $75 to $100, and the most common project fee was $2,501 to $5,000.

A one-off project is worth it when there's a clear, finished job, like fixing a website that Google can't read properly. It won't keep you at the top on its own. If someone offers to "do your SEO" once for a fixed fee and then walk away, ask what happens in month two.

How long does SEO take to work?

Longer than most people hope. In our experience with local businesses, the first signs usually show within 4 to 8 weeks, and that's normally your Google Business Profile picking up more views and calls. Proper movement in the rankings tends to take 3 to 6 months.

A busy city, or a trade with lots of competitors, can take longer than that. It's also why paying for SEO for a single month tells you very little. Budget for at least a few months before you judge whether it's working.

The £99 SEO problem, and the red flags at both ends

Cheap SEO isn't always a scam. But ask how many hours of work £99 a month actually pays for. Once an agency has covered its own costs, there isn't much time left to write pages, run your Google profile and report back properly. So something usually gets automated, skipped or left out.

Google's own advice on hiring an SEO is blunt: "No one can guarantee a #1 ranking on Google." It also warns you to be wary of firms that email you out of the blue. Watch for these signs, whatever the price:

  • A promise of the top spot, or of page one by a certain date.
  • A cold email or call saying your site is "broken" or "missing out".
  • No clear list of what you get each month.
  • Talk of hundreds of links or directory submissions, with no detail on where from.
  • Reports full of graphs, but nothing about calls or enquiries.
  • A 12-month contract before you've seen any work.
  • The agency sets up your Google profile or website in its own name, so you don't fully own it.

Expensive quotes have their own warning sign: a big fee with vague deliverables. If £2,000 a month buys "strategy" and a monthly call, ask what gets written, fixed or published. A price that high should come with a lot of visible work.

Before you sign with anyone, ask for examples of their work and speak to a real client. We did exactly that research for one town in our honest guide to Doncaster SEO agencies, which shows how differently local firms price and present themselves.

What £300 a month buys at Bee Viral

We publish our price because we think you should see it before you speak to anyone. Our local SEO service is £300 a month, with a three-month minimum and then rolling monthly. Each month you get:

  • 4 SEO blog articles every month, written for your local market
  • 4 SEO location pages every month, targeting the towns you serve
  • 12 Google Business Profile posts every month
  • Review monitoring & response drafting
  • Plain-English monthly report: rankings, calls, enquiries

If you want more content, extra articles are £75 a month each. Onboarding is free, and there's no 12-month contract. The three-month minimum is there because SEO takes months, not weeks, to show results, and it wouldn't be honest to take one month's fee and call that a fair test.

To see what a page per town looks like in practice, look at Dearne Accountancy. When we built their website, we included six location pages targeting accountancy searches in Barnsley, Rotherham, Sheffield, Doncaster and Wakefield. That was part of their website build rather than this monthly plan, but they're the same kind of page. Sarah Bingham, their director, said: "The site does the hard part for us. People arrive already trusting us, the free audit fills the calendar with the right kind of leads, and we’re finally showing up when business owners across South Yorkshire search for an accountant." Their site is in our portfolio.

Frequently asked questions

How much does SEO cost per month in the UK?

For a small local business, expect roughly £300 to £800 a month from a local agency, or £50 to £300 from a freelancer. Regional and national work costs more, from £800 up to £10,000 or beyond. These are working ranges, not fixed rates. Our local SEO plan is £300 a month with a three-month minimum.

Why is SEO so expensive?

Because most of it is skilled time, month after month. Pages have to be written, your Google profile kept active, reviews answered, technical problems fixed and results reported. None of that happens once and stays done, as competitors keep working too. The price reflects hours of work, not a piece of software.

Is cheap SEO worth it?

Sometimes, if the job is small and clearly defined, like setting up your Google profile properly. At around £99 a month, though, ask how many hours of work you are actually paying for, and exactly what gets done. Be wary of any cheap offer that also promises top rankings.

How much does local SEO cost?

Local SEO usually costs less than national SEO, because you only compete with businesses near you. Most local agencies charge somewhere between £300 and £800 a month. Ours is £300 a month and covers location pages, articles, Google Business Profile posts, review replies and a plain-English monthly report.

How long does SEO take to work?

For a local business, we usually see the first signs within 4 to 8 weeks, often as more views and calls from your Google Business Profile. Real ranking movement tends to take 3 to 6 months, and longer in busy cities or crowded trades. Anyone promising page one in days is worth avoiding.

Can I pay for SEO one-off?

Yes, for a defined job such as an SEO audit, a website move or a technical clean-up, a fixed one-off price makes sense. Ranking well and staying there is ongoing work, though, so a single payment will not keep you at the top. Most local businesses need a monthly plan for that part.
